According to a juicy rumor, Volkswagen initially planned to fit the RS3’s inline five engine into the Golf R Mk8. Legend has it that the Four Rings denied the and forced the Wolfsburg peasants to rely on their 2.0 liter four-pot to extract more power. Golf R Mk7.5’s owner decided to get rid of the stock engine and replace it with Ingolstadt’s 2.5-liter unit.
Although this type of engine swap is not new, we have seen many similar projects in the past. However, this build has been the most efficient and impressive. It comes from The Netherlands. The car is owned by Instagram user Gry_r800. He has 25,000 followers on the social media platform. The channel features the hot hatch from its early days as a Golf R, to now.
Recently, the VW was captured on camera showing its impeccable engine bay and sweet-sounding TFSI. This engine carries the DAZA codename. It’s the original RS3 before Audi had to make it WLTP-compliant. It now produces supercar power, generating 395 horsepower and 354 pound-feet (480 Newton meters) of torque.
SAR-Turbotechnik, a German aftermarket specialist, was responsible for the engine swap. They fitted the inline five unit with a TTE700 kit by The Turbo Engineers. MTR-Performance managed the software. The result is a Golf R that produces over 800 horsepower and 800 Newton meters (590 pound-feet). This is more than the VW’s Golf GTI W12-650.
The Audi-powered Golf R Mk7.5 shares its spotlight with another highly tuned version, the Mk6 with a TTE480 package.
