It will be available as a luxury passenger van.
It is not secret that Volkswagen has been working on an all-electric bus to replace the Microbus. We now know the launch date in the United States and when it will be revealed.
Car and Driver quotes Carsten Intra from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles division who confirmed that the ID buzz will be available in America in 2023 as a model year 2024. It will launch as a comfortable passenger van. Europe will get a cargo model when the ID Buzz arrives on the Old continent’s market in 2022.
The US market lineup will only include one model and one wheelbase version. There will be both passenger and commercial versions in Europe. Also, you can choose from short or long wheelbase options. Although the cargo model could be sold as an autonomous vehicle, it will arrive many years later. The self-driving version of the vehicle will not likely ever reach the United States.
Driver reports that the ID Buzz will come with three battery options. The base model will be powered by the rear wheels. It is estimated to have around 200 horsepower (150 megawatts). The flagship ID Buzz model could be as powerful as 300 horsepower (224 kW) with a dual motor, AWD setup.
According to reports, Volkswagen will sell 111-kWh batteries packs that can provide a range of up 342 miles (355 kilometers) on a single charge. Even though there are reports that a roof-mounted solar panel could increase the range by as much as 9 miles (15 km), it is not confirmed.
