VW ID Buzz Electric Van Shows Similarities to The Concept

Modern microbuses are on the horizon.

This is the new version of the Volkswagen ID Buzz electric vehicle. The full debut is planned for 2022, and the van should go on sale in the United States by the end of 2023.

VW keeps the development vehicle covered in camouflage but there are obvious similarities to the ID Buzz concept. Both have a very short nose. You can see the decals placed around the headlights, making them appear larger. The openings in the mesh on the lower fascia are larger than those found on the show car.

The cover for the charging port located on the driver’s side front fender can be seen to the side. A large, partially covered window can be seen, while a covering is found on the rear pillar indicates that there may be more glass. Five-spoke wheels in a retro style are used to drive the van.

VW engineers used a lot camouflage to disguise the rear hatchback. The emblem is covered by the company, and decals are placed over the taillight. Attached to the roof is a large spoiler.

June spy shots revealed the Buzz’s cabin. This one had a tiny digital instrument cluster and the gearshift was attached to it with a small nub. The center stack was missing the infotainment screen.

Volkswagen plans to launch the production-spec Buzz with three variants. The six-passenger Buzz will have all occupants facing forward. The family-oriented variant will feature four people in the rear, in seats that face one another. A panel van will be available for commercial clients.

The Buzz will be riding on the MEB platform, just like other VW-branded EVs. Details about the powertrain are still unknown. Based on the models shown, you can expect all-wheel-drive and rear-drive versions. The concept was rated at 369 horsepower (275kilowatts), and has an estimated range of 270miles.
