VW Jetta GLI Blue Lagoon Concept: A Swimming Ode to the Past

It is the same color as the Mk4 GLI.

Concept cars do not all have space-age styling or fictional power sources. These concept cars are sometimes just cooler versions of the car you can purchase right now. Volkswagen has this concept for its Jetta GLI Blue Lagoon. Although you cannot buy it from a dealer, you could make it yourself if that’s what you wanted.

Blue Lagoon is a tie-in that VW enthusiasts will be familiar with. The 2004 US market saw the debut of the Mk4 Jetta GLI, a sporty Mk4 Jetta. It arrived in a striking exterior color called Blue Lagoon. The 2021 concept pays tribute to the classic GLI. However, it isn’t painted in the same color. The team behind the concept used aftermarket body wraps to match the original color. The 2021 Jetta GLIseen above is actually a black car covered in ORAFOL Midnight Blue Metallic.

There’s more to this concept than the color. The VW team turned to Air Design to make the aftermarket side skirts, and the subtle rear spoiler. Fifteen52 handled the Critical Aero Design front spoiler. H&R coil-overs make the GLI sit a little lower, while 20-inch BBS wheels fill out the arches. The Blue Lagoon GLI comes with a golf ball shift knob as well as leather Recaro seats.

The rest of the car is a standard Jetta GLI Jetta, which isn’t a bad thing. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder produces 228 horsepower (170kW) and is sent to the front wheels via either a 6-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch auto. This is a dynamic machine in a rapidly declining segment of sports sedans, so it’s great to see VW give the car extra love, even if only in concept.

Sean Maynard (VW enthusiast and motorsport marketing specialist) stated that the Jetta GLI was a fan favorite over its 37-year history. This build concept pays tribute to the Mk4 and celebrates the passion that goes into these cars.

This special Jetta will travel with the Volkswagen Enthusiast Fleet to events across the US.
