The VW Beetle has been retired. In July , the final model was rolled off the assembly lines. Volkswagen pays tribute to this iconic model with an animated short. Tonight’s episode of ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020 will feature the animated short.
Titled The Last Mile the short tells the story of a young boy who reaches major milestones in his life. The story begins with the father of the young boy bringing his Beetle home. The boy soon learns to drive and goes on dates. Eventually, he owns the Beetle. The boy becomes a young man and falls in love. He starts a family and then watches his daughter grow up. Finally, he is an old gentleman and the Beetle takes off into the sky. This short features a Pro Musica Youth Chorus rendition of “Let it Be”, the Beatles song.
It’s a poignant farewell to an important and iconic automobile that provided transportation for millions around the globe. In 2003, the iconic Beetle that was immortalized by Herbie The Love Bug was retired from production. However, the automaker had introduced the modern New Beetle five year earlier. The Beetle’s design was updated by VW in 2011. It retained the round roof but made it more coupe-like. This is the model that was discontinued earlier in the year.
The short ends with a nod to VW’s electrified future of ID model models and flips the iconic “Think Small” Beetle campaign with the “Drive Bigger” slogan.
