You can see the record-breaking run from many angles.
Travis Pastrana set an crazy record on a climb up Mt. Washington Auto Road completed the hill climb in 5 minutes 44.72, 24 seconds faster than the previous record. Gymkhana’s star performed that feat using a 600-horsepower (447 kilowatts) Subaru WrX STI rally vehicle built by Vermont SportsCar.
Pastrana broke his own record by just a hair, setting a new time for 5:28.67. Above is the onboard video as well as other angles from the record-breaking hill climb.
This was used for the Mt. Washington hill climb is another Subaru WRX STI, but this time it’s the custom WRX STI with a turbocharged 2.3 liter flat-four. It produces 862 hp (623 kW), and 664 poundfeet (900 Newton-meters) torque.
“New record in our books!” Pastrana said after his win. Pastrana said, “This car is the best machine to do it.” After finishing second at Goodwood, I wanted to set a new record to demonstrate what the car can do in the right conditions. I was fortunate to have good weather this year, so I knew I would be able to get a clean run in for the 5:44 time. It was so much fun, and I cannot wait to do it again next year!
The Mt. The Washington Hill Climb takes place every three years. It is the oldest and most difficult hill climb in North America, and it is a highly regarded motorsport event. Mt. Washington Auto Road is narrow, dangerous, and has a grade of 12%. It also has an uneven surface that is bounded by severe drops above the treeline.
Pastrana will still hold the record for at least a few years, before anyone else attempts to do so from the rally racer. We wouldn’t be surprised if Travis is that person.
